What is the difference between an all-natural perfume and an essential oil scent?

Unfortunately, the FDA does not regulate the term “all natural,” so that phrase doesn’t necessarily indicate that an ingredient is truly pure. All natural perfume, while generally not synthetic, can still be highly processed using chemical or synthetic solvents. We only use 100% genuine essential oils that are minimally processed to maintain the pure benefits of the plant.

Why do you only use essential oils?

We only use essential oils for a gentle and healthy aroma that provides healing benefits as well as a pleasant scent experience. Essential oils have been used for centuries as natural holistic medicine and we believe in the powerful therapy they provide. Note, aromatherapy benefits are only possible when you use pure unadulterated essential oils.

If essential oils are so great then why don't all companies use them?

Bottom line, essential oils are delicate, unpredictable and expensive. So they are hard to manipulate into a very specific experience. And let's face it most companies like to control the outcome of consumer experiences and make lots of money doing it. Uncovered by the LA TIMES $150 for $1.50 worth of perfume

Many companies use synthetic fragrance chemicals to mimic natural smells in order to save on costs and provide a lasting scent experience. Unfortunately this experience can have an impact on your long term health.

Why is it bad to use syntethic fragrances?

Because "fragrances" are protected under trade-secret and companies do not have to divulge ingredients. That means you have no visibility on what you are ingesting - and synthetic fragrances can contain 100s of ingredients. Fragrance chemists have access to 5,000+ different ingredients and only about 1,300 have actually been tested. 16 percent of the colognes, fragrances, and perfumes reviewed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) contain carcinogenic ingredients. The EWG also reported that there were 38 secret chemicals found in 17 brand name perfumes that they tested. (source link)

These chemicals can include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and other toxins that may cause cancer, birth defects, autoimmune disorders, and allergic reactions. A 2001 EPA study showed that synthetic fragrances cause “possible mutagenic and genotoxic effects.” Some synthetic fragrance chemicals even accumulate in human tissues and breast milk.

What should I look for in other products to see if they are the same as LITE+CYCLE?

Look for products that are transparent with ingredients and mark on their packaging that they only use essential oils. Many products on the market claim to be “made with essential oils.”  Unless specified, this usually does not mean the product is scented solely with 100% pure essential oils. Generally these contain a blend of essential oils and synthetic fragrance oils. Because the FDA does not require companies to disclose fragrance ingredients, the amount of essential oil that is in the product could be as little as a single drop. LITE+CYCLE scents are always 100% genuine essential oils. We also practice ingredient transparency and will disclose full ingredients in our natural perfumes and candles. No fragrance secrets!

As a general rule always look for strong well displayed language like; "only" "% of" "certified organic" etc... and not suggestive language like; "derived from" "all natural" "contains..."

Why do you only use only pure ingredients?

We use only 100% pure unadulterated ingredients because we believe that what you subject your body to should be as clean and healthy as possible - and in harmony with nature.

What are your full ingredients?

Ingredients are listed on each product page.

What are phthalates and do your products contain them?

Phthalates are a class of chemical known to cause hormone disruption and birth defects. Phthalates are used in synthetic fragrance to stabilize scent and help it last longer. Phthalates are absorbed into the body through the skin or via inhalation. A CDC study showed that women in childbearing years have high amounts of phthalates accumulated in their tissues—likely due to the number of artificially scented products young women use. These chemicals impact fertility and may cause birth defects. Scientists are also now researching suspected links between phthalates and asthma, childhood obesity, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.

What are petrochemicals and do your products contain them?

Petrochemicals, or petroleum distillates, are chemical products derived from petroleum. They release volatile organic compounds (that become gases in the air) that have been linked to symptoms such as headaches, dizzinesss, rash, nausea, and damage to the central nervous system. Not to mention bad for the environment.

Why don't LITE+CYCLE scents smell as strong as my others?

Your LITE+CYCLE scents are made with pure ingredients direct from nature. They are not manipulated or tricked into being anything other than what they are. By nature, each plant has its own scent staying power or volatility. For example a citrus will disappear faster than a wood. Basically, it is what it is and we celebrate that.

You are use to your old experience; the fragrance industry has successfully been training consumers to value a fragrance experience by how big it is and how long it lasts. In fact innovations are taking place every day (link here) to create even longer lasting fragrances! So that fragrance companies can give the consumer more perceived value for less cost. Little to no care is given to the effect that synthetic perfumes have on your health—instead the focus is on potency and price point.

What kind of wax do you use in your candles?

We use only non-GMO vegan waxes. Our vessel wax is pesticide-free, American-grown soy wax. Our pillar wax is non-GMO, American-grown vegetable oil and wax blend Our waxes not only burn cleaner than alternative waxes, but also are gentle on the planet and its creatures. Soy beans are a renewable resource and a wonderful way to support American farming.

Do you test on animals?

No! All of our products are 100% cruelty-free and vegan.

Do you use beeswax?

No. Beeswax, while natural, is an animal byproduct. We do not use it in order to create 100% vegan candles.

Do you use paraffin?

No. Paraffin is a wax derived from petroleum, the processing of which contributes to climate change. When burned, paraffin wax fumes can cause irritation to the eyes, respiratory system, and even cause nausea in sensitive individuals.  Most pillar candles are made from paraffin because it helps to maintain the rigidness of the wax. Our 100% vegetable wax blend in our natural candles is unique in that it has the structural benefits of paraffin without any of the negative health or environmental effects.

Where are your products made?

All our products are conceived and designed in our Los Angeles studio. Our Essential Oil Perfumes are made in the studio in Los Angeles, CA, and our vegan candles are hand-poured in an FDA certified facility in Vermont.

What does “cleanly distilled” mean?

Cleanly distilled means we use oils that are distilled using the cleanest methods available. Some essential oils are distilled from the original plant using harsh solvents or petrochemicals, which can contaminate the pure plant essence. Our goal is to provide the cleanest home scents possible, which means using oils that are isolated using time-honored methods like cold-pressing and steam distillation. We do not use any absolutes.

What is steam distillation?

Steam distillation is a pure process of extracting essential oils from plants without chemicals or solvents. When steam is applied to a plant, tiny pockets within the plant’s fibers open, releasing essential oil into the steam. The oil-laden steam is the condensed into a liquid and separated into water and pure essential oil.

What is cold pressing?

Cold pressing is another pure method of extracting essential oils that minimizes the amount of heat applied to the pure plant ingredients. It is primarily used for extracting oils from fruits and seeds. During the process, fruit is first rolled over a trough, releasing essential oil from the peel. The whole fruit is then pressed to release more oil and juice from the pulp. The resulting liquid is spun in a centrifuge to separate the fruit juice from the essential oil.

What is the best way to burn my LITE+CYCLE natural candle?

  • Trim the wick to 1/4” (6mm) before lighting and make sure wick is standing as straight as possible.
  • Burn for 2 hours at a time, allowing the candle to cool before lighting again. This will help maintain a wall around the wick.
  • If you notice your candle burning to one side, rotate it – there may be a draft in the room causing an uneven burn.
  • Always burn pillar candles on a fire-safe dish, preferably at least 1-2” deep.
  • Prior to re-lighting please remove any mushrooming of wick. You can do this by carefully pinching the top of the (unlit) wick.

How do I re-use the glass container?

After your candle has burned clean, simply place an unwrapped LITE+CYCLE pillar candle into the glass vessel. It will stick up slightly. Do not force it down to avoid damaging your vessel. Trim the wick and light. The candle will gently sink into the glass as it burns, filling the edges and tapering at the bottom. Always remember to remove all packaging and trim wick prior to lighting.

How do I remove wax residue in the glass?

Our poured natural candles are made with 100% non-GMO soy wax and should not leave any residue. Our pillar candles are made of a blend of vegetable wax and may leave build-up after the candle is exhausted. If this occurs, place your extinguished and cool candle into the freezer for 30 minutes or longer. Then simply turn the vessel upside down and tap gently on the bottom to pop out excess wax.

How do I use the strike pad on the underside of the lid?

The etched surface on the bottom of your candle’s lid can be used as a striking surface for strike-anywhere matches. Simply draw the match briskly across the pattern and the match will ignite. You might have to be assertive to get the spark ;-)

How should I store my candles?

When not in use, please store your candle upright and in a cool (preferably between 50-70 degrees) environment away from direct sunlight.

What do I do with the wax disc on the top of the pillar candle?

The wax disc or button, is simply to hold the packaging together and to act as a smelling tester. Please remove it and all packing prior to lighting.

I noticed some color variation in my candles. Why?

Because we use only the purest ingredients, some natural color variation may occur. Essential oils may also shift in color with time. This is completely normal and will not affect the integrity of your candle.

I noticed some oil spots on the outside of the pillar packaging. Is the candle still good?

Yes. Our pillar candles are made with a very high content of essential oils (up to 10%.) Just like a fine cheese, our candles will occasionally sweat. There is nothing wrong with the candle. Candles will sweat more in hotter temperatures, so please store in a cool environment.

Why don’t you recommend ground shipping your pillar candles during the Summer?

Our pillar candles are freestanding cylinders of fresh waxes and oils. They will begin to melt in temperatures over 83 degrees. We don’t send out pillar candles during summer to avoid heat damage during shipment.

How does aromatherapy affect the energy of a space?

Essential oils have very real biochemical affects on our physical and emotional wellbeing. Some essential oils like lavender are calming, improving the body’s response to stress hormones. Others, like bergamot, are energizing—awakening the mind and increasing alertness. Understanding the effects of these oils makes it possible to control the emotional atmosphere in your space. If you’re feeling blue, you can fill your space with uplifting scents to create a joyful energy in your home designed to brighten your mood.

What is an atmospheric benefit?

In addition to aromatherapy benefits, our natural candles also release atmospheric benefits that alter the air in your space. For example, the scent of sage can actually adjust the ionic composition of the air you breathe. When you burn sage essential oil, it releases negative ions that cancel toxic positive particles in the air, thereby purifying your space. Additionally, just as curtains diffuse the light in your space, scent can also greatly impact the vibe of your room. In fact, scent is one of the simplest ways to change the mood in your home. For example, if you find your bedroom cold and stark, try burning a vetiver candle to warm and soften the energy in your space.

What are your strongest scents?

Our strongest scents are Urban Forest then Vetiver.
